This just sounds like Orbot in VPN mode, which we already have from The Guardian Project.

Am I missing something here? Is this going to be better or different?

Edit: this article is weird, trying to sell VPN affiliates but acting like Tor VPN isn’t available yet. But it is:

Edit 2: you can’t run Orbot in Advanced mode over TorVPN, for those apps that you already configured to only connect to a specific proxy port over 127.0.0.1. No Tor over Tor. Would have been funny if it worked though.

It’s currently in beta so I’m guessing that’s just a step towards a 1.0 release.

Any idea if there’s a reason for there to be a second app though? If you have Orbot already, it shipped with the same defaults as TorVPN, and in my opinion Orbot is already decent-looking and easy to use.

Maybe it’s better for this to be a first party app, but right now I don’t know what they’re going for.

Yeah not really sure tbh but it’s a long time since I’ve used orbot. I’ve just downloaded the beta from fdroid so I’ll give it a whirl.

Edit: looks like it’s a rust rewrite. From the fdroid page:

Built on Arti: Tor VPN uses Tor’s next-generation Rust implementation. That means safer memory handling, modern code architecture, and a stronger security foundation than legacy C-Tor tools.
