everything that’s wrong with OLED
I thought it would have been about its uneven wear characteristics, but better PWM handling is cool too.
I have the 11" Plus tablet and it’s honestly a damn solid tablet. Performance is pretty good (it isn’t playing Genshin Impact well, but can handle some light gaming just fine), the screen looks great in normal mode, and the two paper mode gimmicks are actually really really cool. I’m interested to see how this turns out (I know this is about the phone, but they both use the same tech).
I’m waiting to see if they’ll make a smaller tablet, closer to the iPad mini size. Or actually just give me a A5 planner size. I’m obsessed with the paper ISO standard; I’m constantly mildly annoyed that they aren’t more appreciated and used in a lot more things other than paper based objects lol
Mine should be arriving tomorrow. I’m excited to compare it to my eink kobo, especially for comics and such. And the rest of the specs sound solid.
I figure if the tablet goes well, maybe the phone will be next.Let us know your thoughts, I have the Kobo Libre colour.
I’d like a 9-10" tablet with the oled backed screen
I maybe should have clarified myself better. I have a B&W Clara HD, so no color to compare.
However (and I preface this with the note that I’ve had the 11 Plus tablet for ~1 day), I love this thing.
It’s no powerhouse, it’s not a top-line SD 8 or anything. It’s a mid-line MTK G100 SOC with 8GB RAM.
That said it’s easily performant enough for my usage, which is media consumption.
The screen is the star of the show, and it’s frankly awesome… if you are looking for a matte finish. I have a matte plastic (TPU or whatever) screen protector on the OP12 phone that I <3 so much, and this tablet screen is very similar in the overall finish. Very little “graininess” or whatever that tends to happen, so it is a very fine grain matte surface. The display has great saturation and color, but it is an LCD so there are limits to viewing angle and black contrast. If you’re looking for OLED deep black, it’s not like that, but it is very good for what it is.
The “color modes” are awesome, but again, I have no color e-ink to compare. From what I’ve seen in reviews and videos, it’s very comparable to color e-ink in overall look. But the resolution is much higher, as well as framerate, obviously. When you turn it to the B&W option, not only does it obviously make everything greyscale, but the white colors get shifted to a more neutral off-white that mimics e-ink background really well. The only thing that is missing for me, is fingerprint reader. :|
Overall, I’m very happy with the idea. I may swap out to the phone in the future, when I get sick of the OP12, because then I’ll likely start paring down my online-ness and having the screen won’t be as necessary. Hopefully the cameras don’t suck too much. :)
Oh, also, it’s nearly a 12" screen, in actuality, so it’s not small.
I’ve never tried one because it’s LCD but OLED upgrade is enticing. Don’t care about processing power. More of a versatile ereader. So a 6-10" display that’s pleasant enough on the eyes and still good with color and motion. Hopefully they’ll be in stores to take a gander at next year
