Has anyone kept up with the original PinePhone / what the most up to date ditros are for it? I have one laying around and would love to get something newer on there as I currently have a very old build of Mobian. Much like the author, I’m really not liking the direction Google has been heading and the experience gets more miserable by the day

There’s little hope since it’s a closed system with authentication chain to google. It doesn’t even work on android phones when google doesn’t feel like it.
Europe has a few banks that have their own system that might be possible to get running with very good emulation. But those apps too are obfuscated closed blobs with endless proprietary root detection stuff.A good solution would need some fundamental change in how payments work.
I jumped ship to e/OS here in Canada a couple months ago. Had to order the phone specifically and install e/OS since it only came with Android internationally. It’s honestly been pretty easy so far. I know e/OS is kind just a degooglefied version of Android but it has professional developers behind it so we’ll see where it goes.

What’s wrong with SailfishOS?
There were (are?) some non-free proprietary parts to it, along with a subscription to emulate android apps. As far ad I know they were slowly open sourcing more and more of the special sauces.
But also according to many users on their forum, it has been a very mediocre to bad experience for many people such that many or most people who use sailfish do so while having to carry a second phone to access basic functions like receiving calls or GPS navigation or similar, which personally defeats the purpose for me.
I am really hoping their new 2026 phone is a complete turnaround and a great experience because we desperately need a daily driver Linux phones.

Ubuntu Touch looking pretty solid, with waydroid. Seems like it can do all the basics well enough! Maybe the time is coming

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What they were referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
