All they really mean, but won’t say, is that memory makes them more money than phones - so they no longer give a fuck about phones.

Samsung Mobile division is complaining here that memory is so expensive they can’t afford to put a phone out at a set price for more than a few weeks without starting to lose money.

Samsung Memory division meanwhile: our profits are so obscene that we’ve raised the entire company profits 800% this year.

Its literally two divisions in the same damn office, their directors sit in the same boardroom - Samsung Electronics.

    They can go f*ck themselves.

I stopped using Samsung products when they locked the bootloader with the One UI 8.5 update and before that I probably only skipped a couple of generations of Galaxy Note and Ultra phones.

I understand wanting to keep customers inside your ecosystem, but that should be done through convenience, not by holding hostage the hardware I already paid for.

Damn, poor Samsung, they certainly havent advertised and pushed for AI usage at all in their products! Oh and they certainly havent had record profits in other divisions!

Pretty sure the S26 was selling record numbers for them.

To be not turning a profit despite how expensive their phones are and being the only serious android manufacturer in the US, you’re either lying, or so incredibly poorly mismanaged it’s gotta set a new record somehow

being the only serious android manufacturer in the US,

…? Does “serious” only include companies that make the worst and also most expensive phones or what?

Ask an average non-tech person about phones and they’ll only know Apple and Samsung. They can suck but they’re the only company that’s serious about brand recognition and consistently making new generations of phpnes

Thats not what it says. They say the single units are not profitable, as in it costs more to make them than they sell for

The reason for the reduction is, of course, the surging price of memory.

Maybe this will finally force lazy developers to optimise their programs a bit more. For decades we’ve had computers getting significantly faster every year so you didn’t need to bother optimising your code for lower resources.

Nope, sorry. They’re slopping everything with AI now so it has seven different subroutines that all do the same thing and are undocumented, and three different libraries have been imported with overlapping functionality.

I reviewed a PR the other day that added new test cases and was +40k LOC. It was the same file copy/pasted >400 times with a few strings changed each time. Guess what “super intelligence” wrote it

With more companies claiming this and prices going up, could we go back to not requiring everyone has a newish smartphone?

That would require security updates etc to be done longer for phones so banking software and the rest will carry on working.

the iPhone is right there, you can get an SE for ~499?

The 11 which came out pre-covid still gets regular updates alongside the other phones.

This is a uniquely Android problem.

Or make phones that just phone. It wasn’t that long ago they were like that. People didn’t carry around direct access on demand and we didn’t fucking die, we just didn’t have instant gratification.

It would suck but we’d survive it.
