What was sharedrop used for before being acquired? Never heard about it before
p2p file transfer without accounts. You just sent a link or scanned a qr code and nos you were connected. Always used it for vms. I’ve been using pairdrop.net as a replacement
I recommend sendme. It’s a p2p file transfer system run on top of the hole-punching iroh. No port forwarding required from either side. And iroh is e2e encrypted.
Not the same:
- sendme requires an install. Sharecrop was browser based. Which also increases security
- the transfer requires a id I’d have to copy to the VM by hand each time I want to transfer. Sharedrop was a single code for the whole session

There was a really entertaining documentary on Netflix about the original festival. Highly recommend watching it, there are some real gems in some of the interviews.

The Limewire they mention I can only assume it’s the old Napster clone that was commonly used for piracy before the age of BitTorrent.
The festival was basically a scam. People paid a lotta money for some super elaborate fancy party and got essentially nothing and were, understandably, pissed.
